Why paver base depth matters in Las Vegas's desert soil
Las Vegas doesn't have a frost-heave problem — it has an expansive, poorly-compacted desert soil problem. Here's what that means for a patio, driveway, or retaining wall base.

Las Vegas doesn't get meaningful ground freeze, so patios and driveways here don't fail the way they do in colder climates. What they do fail from is just as predictable: uncompacted or under-built base over our native desert soil, which is a mix of loose, poorly-bearing fill in some areas and a hard, cemented caliche layer in others — neither of which supports a paver or slab surface on its own.
What this means for a patio or driveway
The compacted aggregate base under a patio or driveway is what actually carries the load and resists settling — the pavers or concrete on top are just the finished surface. Skipping proper excavation depth, using too little base material, or under-compacting it lets the surface above settle unevenly as loose soil shifts under seasonal moisture changes and everyday use.
Why shortcut bases fail within a couple of years
A patio built on a shallow, under-compacted base looks fine the first year. What exposes the shortcut is normal seasonal moisture swings and monsoon rain events — our summer storms can dump a lot of water fast, and a base that wasn't compacted or graded to shed water settles and shifts where the soil beneath it gets saturated and then dries. Pavers or concrete on top heave, settle unevenly, or crack. This is the single most common reason we get called out to fix hardscape another contractor installed a year or two earlier.
What this means for retaining walls
Taller retaining walls are a different case — they need engineered footings sized for the actual soil-bearing capacity on site (which our desert soil doesn't offer for free), along with proper drainage behind the wall so water pressure doesn't build up after a monsoon storm. This is also where permitting requirements are more likely to apply.
